How this works

Your passphrase derives an AES-256 key here, in the page, using PBKDF2 with 600,000 iterations. Files are encrypted before upload. The server stores ciphertext and an IV, and holds no key capable of reading them.

That is also the limitation: there is no reset. A reset path would mean the server could decrypt. Lose the passphrase and the documents are gone permanently.

Two-factor authentication

A six-digit code from an authenticator app, on top of your password. Off unless you switch it on. It protects signing in; it is not part of the vault's encryption, so switching it on or off never touches your documents.

—

Scan this in your authenticator app, or type the key in by hand.

Write these down now. Each works once, in place of a code, if you cannot reach your authenticator. They are not shown again.

Where you are signed in

Every device holding a live session for this account. Ending one signs that device out immediately.

Change your password

There is one password: it signs you in and it opens Settings. This form changes it.

This is also your vault passphrase. Changing it makes any document already stored in the vault permanently unreadable, so empty the vault first if it has anything in it. All other sessions are signed out.

Delete your account

Removes your account and everything kept under it on the server: your trip, bookings, flights, chats, settings and the phones registered for alerts. What this phone holds offline (passes, saved maps) is removed when the app is uninstalled. This cannot be undone. A plan that is still billing has to be cancelled first.

Time & time zones

Every time and date in the app — reminders, bookings, the assistant’s answers — uses this zone. Following your phone, it changes by itself when your phone does after you land.

The map reads the clock where you are pointing it. Your home zone stays next to it, so a call back home is never mistimed by a day.

Map options

Every switch on the map — the layers you turned on, which kinds of transit and places you picked, your travel mode — saves itself as you tap it and comes back next time. This puts all of them back to the defaults. Your account, saved places and offline map areas are not touched.

Your data

Your own records are saved on this device first, so they are always with you. Here is what lives where, how much room it takes, and whether a copy also goes to your account.

This app on this device

The app keeps a copy of itself so it opens with no signal. If a screen ever looks broken or stuck on an old version after an update, empty that copy — nothing on your account is touched, and saved offline map areas are kept.

Where the app’s information comes from, and what to double-check.

The maps, data and photos this app uses, credited as each one asks.

Tools

The cross on a tool only closes its panel. To take a layer off the map, use the switch at the top of the tool or the cross on its chip.

Transit—

Stops and lines are mapped almost everywhere. Live departure times, bus arrivals and journey plans depend on each city publishing its timetable, so some cities and countries have them and some do not.

    Weather—

Zoomed in past the radar’s own detail — the picture is stretched, so treat the edges as roughly a kilometre wide.

    —

    Weather data by Open-Meteo.com

Radar frames are the last two hours from the national weather-radar networks — play them and the direction the rain is travelling is the thing you can see. Coverage follows the radars: good over most land, empty over open ocean and over countries with no public radar, where the cloud-top view still works. Wind, temperature and storm risk come from public forecast models.

    Live—

    Roads and city

    Alerts

    People and sky

Live layers show what each city or country publishes. Bikes, car parks, cameras, traffic and ships exist only in some places, so a layer can be empty where you are — What works here below says which.

    More

    Flight radar—

Positions are broadcast by the aircraft and picked up by ground receivers. Coverage is good over land and thin over oceans. Search takes a flight number in either spelling — SQ322 and SIA322 both work — or a registration, ICAO address, aircraft type, airline code or squawk.

    Live cameras—

Public cameras that road and transport authorities publish deliberately. Most are stills the camera replaces every half minute. California’s are live video, London’s are short clips, and both play here when you open one — look for the badge.

    Map source

The default map has full street detail with 3D buildings.

Outside the Latin alphabet the map draws both by default — 北京市 under Beijing. Latin only is what you want if you cannot read the script; local only is what you want if you are asking someone for directions and need to show them the name they use.

    Offline maps

Saves the area you are looking at so it works with no signal — anywhere in the world: the map, plus every place in it (search in any language, opening hours, phone numbers, the nearest hospital, police and your consulate), walking and driving directions, the forecast and the city guide. Frame the area first — a city or a district. Save before you travel: it needs a connection to download.
